Lazure Painting - Nurturing the Soul Forces

Lazure Painting is a unique style of painting. It is unlike faux or other decorative finishes. You can feel the difference as soon as you walk into the room. It creates a very natural breath and dimension to the room. It not only works with color and light, but with a certain spiritual rhythm. It is ideal for creating a special space in your home or a therapy room.

Lazure is not only done with a certain application, it is also imperative that the space created while painting is one of peace and mindfulness. This is because it is easy for a painter to imprint their emotions and feelings into the wet paint while they paint the wall. For this reason, I am very sensitive to where my mind is when I paint. If, I can not hold a space of integrity on a certain day or hour, I won't paint, but will return when I can hold a space of integrity. I remember Lazure painting with a group of people who were being very negative while painting. It felt like a chaotic conversation and I actually quietly left the paint job. What was interesting to me was that a year later someone else rented the room and called me asking for help as she felt the room was very chaotic and felt that while the paint job was beautiful, she needed to re-paint the room as it did not feel right.

All you have to do to check this out for yourself is by eating food. There is a difference in the feeling and quality of a meal when someone puts care in the meal. To where a meal is created when someone is grumpy, in a hurry or fighting. The food of the latter can even give the recipients a stomach ache. Whereas, the food cooked by someone in a nurturing space tastes good and feels good when eating it. Apparently, there is a restaurant in Seattle that has recognized the importance of this and the Cooks pray over their food as they make it.
While Lazure painting is more than being aware of your state of mind while painting, it is an important part in the Lazure process in creating a nurturing space. One can create a beautiful space but is it nurturing to the soul forces?

Oil Painting - Why You Must Choose Oil Painting?

Painting enthusiasts have been using oil paints to make their work of creation for more than a hundred years. It was initially recognized in the 13th century in England. They used it at that time, as a means for simple decoration.

Even at that time, there were many artists who used tempera, in the place of the oil paints because it dried easily, without any hassle. This form of painting came to be used and practiced as a different form of art in the 17th century. If you are still wondering as to why you must choose it as a form of art then here are some important benefits:

This type of paint dries slower than other forms, hence gives enough time for the artists to paint. Though there are some artists who may find this 'slow drying quality' a bit cumbersome, this is one art form that must be taught to almost every arts student. This is partially because a lot of reproductions have been developed using this type of paints.

Besides its robust quality, there are several other advantages of oil paints. Some of them are as follows:

It can be left open for a long time as it doesn't dry too fast. It can be left open for weeks together. This makes artists to work upon different sessions. This characteristic of painting can also be seen as a disadvantage as this means, it takes weeks for a project to complete, by letting the first coat dry and apply another coat.

Another advantage is that it blends outstandingly with the surrounding paint. When it is blended on the canvas, it helps in creating an  artistic brush stroke and other artistic forms which are not possible otherwise. These attributes make this form of painting a unique form of art.

Sketching Drawing - How to Obtain Correct Proportions

Realistic drawing relies on obtaining the correct proportions of a scene or subject in your drawing. This is especially true of portraiture where a good likeness is the main aim. Let's look at a method for obtaining correct proportions in your drawings.

What are proportions?

Proportions are about size relationships. When we compare the size of one object to the size of another object we are checking the difference in the sizes of the two objects. This difference in size can be expressed as a proportion, e.g. one of the objects may be twice the size of the other. Proportions can be expressed in different ways; we can use percentages 'Object A is 50% bigger than object B', or numbers 'Object C is twice as big as object A', or ratios 'Object D has a 3:1 ratio to object B'. In drawing it is usually easiest to use the numbers system (which may include fractions i.e. Object B is one half the size of object A).

Proportional relationships

From any given viewpoint, the sizes of the objects in the scene are normally fixed. If, from your chosen viewpoint, object A appears to be twice the size of object B then this relationship will usually remain fixed. From the same viewpoint, another object, object C, may appear to be one half the size of object B, in which case we know for sure that object C must be one quarter the size of object A. These are the proportional relationships and for a realistic rendition of the scene these relationships must be transferred accurately to the drawing paper. The proportional relationships in a scene are actually a visual phenomenon based on your viewpoint and are not necessarily related to the actual sizes of the physical objects in the scene. For example, it is quite possible for a tennis ball to be visually larger than a football if the viewpoint is sufficiently close to the tennis ball and the distance to the football is great enough. Remember: proportional relationships are firstly dictated by the viewpoint in relation to the scene and secondly by the physical size of the objects in the scene.

Getting the proportions right

The key to obtaining correct proportion in your drawing is to choose one measure (the length, width or height of something) in the scene, or on the subject, and use this to measure everything else in the scene. This first measure is your subject basic unit (the SBU) and you find the size relationships of other objects in the scene by comparing them to your SBU. For example, if you choose the width of a door as the SBU you can find the correct proportion of the door width to the door height by counting how many times the SBU goes into the height. For example, you may find that the height of the door is two and one half SBUs high; this tells you that the proportional relationship of the height of the door is two and one half times its width.

If we correctly draw the width of the door on our drawing paper at the size we need and in the correct position in the drawing format, we have produced a drawing basic unit (the DBU) that matches the SBU. We can then use the proportional relationship from the scene with our DBU to correctly assess the height of the door in the drawing. We then continue to use the SBU to measure all of the other important sizes in the actual scene and transfer them to our drawing paper using the DBU. In this way we maintain the proportional relationships of the scene in our drawing; the result will be a very accurate rendition.

The Hand Sewing Needle - History and Facts

Even a small thing like a hand sewing needle has had a role in the history of humans. Some facts and history about the hand sewing needle:

The first sewing needles were made from bone and were used to sew animal hides together. The oldest known bone ones were found in what is now southwestern France and has been estimated to be over 25,000 years old.
Needles made from copper, silver and bronze were used in ancient Egypt.
The oldest iron needle known was found in what is now Germany, and dates back to the 3rd century B.C.E.
Bookbinders and shoemakers used ones made from hog bristles in the Middle Ages.
Native Americans used porcupine quills and the pointed end of agave leaves for sewing needles. The fibers of the agave leaf were also used for thread.
Metal needle making was perfected by Muslims in Spain in the 11th century. Spanish Muslims were some of the most knowledgeable medical doctors in the world at the time, and had perfected many surgical techniques that required needles for suturing.
When the Muslims were driven out of Spain in the 15th century, they took the knowledge of needle making with them to Arab lands. Muslims returned to making them, and Arab traders took them to Europe.
Europe learned the art of needle making from Arab needle makers, and it came to England in the 17th century. Before this time, metal needles were made in Europe by the local blacksmith, and resulted in very crude needles.
The knowledge of needle making was also used to make fish hooks in England. The country became well known for high quality fish hooks as well as sewing needles in the middle of the 17th century.
Metal needles were handcrafted before the industrial age. The process began with cutting wire long enough to make two needles. Then points were ground on either end of the wire, the wire was flattened in the middle and eyes punched out. The needles were then separated. This operation is still followed today, but machines now do the work instead of humans.
Around 1850 needle making machines began producing needles and turned needle making from a cottage industry into an industry done in factories. By 1866 there were 100 million needles being made in England a year.
The English town and district of Redditch in central England became the center of the world's needle production in the 19th century. The craftsmanship of the needles made there was so great that a foreign manufacturer sent a hypodermic needle to Redditch claiming that it was smaller than Redditch needle makers could produce. The needle was sent back to the manufacturer with a needle made by Redditch craftsman so small that it fit inside the foreign manufacturer's!
Needle making is still being done in the Redditch area and other places in England.
